<image:caption>I am a dancer because of Janet Jackson, for so many reasons. True story! When invited to curate this event it was obvious that the show’s underlining curatorial concepts should springboard from Janet Jackson in some way. Taking the lyrics “my body’s an exhibition baby” from the song Feedback (2008) as inspiration, I am exploring the role of the spectator when observing the body as an object, as well as how bodies are seen, and what it means to be seen. As a choreographer and curator, I started to investigate how the image of the body plays a central role in how the movement is interpreted. This question comes from being a dancer and finding my career dictated by my body image, not my technical skill.</image:caption>

      <image:title>curation</image:title>
<image:caption>* Codified dance, like ballet and modern dance, is a camp or queer version of people, society, historical moments anyway; so why not acknowledge it. When researching dance history, I acknowledge the bodies don’t represent us but we are representations of questioning those bodies. To queering dance history can be to ignore it all together. I have no judgement on wether a person is “queer enough” as queer is about openness and relies more on questions than definitions. How does the body represent its socio-economic background when the image in American and European dance history is inherently middle and upper class? Who are our idols? How are they different from celebrities? Can we love dance? Can we love pop culture? Can we love things and not be embarrassed for it? Growing up learning about historical dance works I felt they were systematically heteronormative even when they were not overtly asking for it. I propose the question to myself: “How to queer dance history?” Curation is a social act like hosting a party, bringing artist or artworks together to dialogue together, party together, argue with each other and/or create new knowledge. Is this queering curation? Not all the works in the show are made by dance artists but in the making or final product they are choreographic. Not all the works in the show are made by queer identifying artists but I see the art works as queer through the ways they use the body, or place the representation of a body at the centre. Being an artist with ADHD, how can I make an over-stimulating experience for the viewer that reflects my everyday lived experience? One topic. Multiplicity of perspectives. A few distractions along the way. The show is hoping to stimulate, and then stimulate again and again with constant movements and a plethora of colours either through the works or the visitor themselves. Like the lyrics of the song, the show is a dialogue between performer and viewer and those roles are not stable. At times flipping the experience of the audience from being the spectator to being on display for the objects themselves, in sense queering the theatre or theatrical experience. How can the exhibition act as a CD, all the artworks are tracks within the album. How can we experience dance instead of watching dance?</image:caption>

      <image:title>curation</image:title>
<image:caption>I moved to New York City in 1999 to study Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Pockets of nightlife were still thriving in spite of Mayor Giuliani’s tightening of regulations, with clubs connecting people in ways that felt more urgent and vital than ever before. Clubs became a place for me to explore my identity, giving me a place to live as myself, dance freely and meet other young gay men in a more authentic and grittier way than an annual Pride parade – the glossiness of which didn’t resonate with me. Having spent my formative years on the dancefloor, this exhibition was a way for me to acknowledge my queer predecessors who made it possible for me to live freely, safely and explore my identity. It was a moment for me to acknowledge those shoulders I stand on, all these years later.</image:caption>

<image:caption>While upstairs referenced the icon, downstairs celebrated the subculture. A nod to the darkroom of a club, outlines of bodies and figures were depicted in UV light. I spent a lot of time in darkrooms during my clubbing days – never to participate, but rather to sit and watch, experiencing the scene as a choreographic study, a performance of queer sexuality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The third exhibition space was in the bathroom. A tribute to Keith Haring, this piece referenced his mural Once Upon A Time, which cover the walls of the bathroom at the LGBT Community Center on West 13th Street in downtown Manhattan. While stylistically different, I see my minimalist line drawings as a continuation of Haring’s lineage.</image:caption>

      <image:title>MBNo1, 2020 - my body’s no.1, 2020</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece looks at queering moments in dance history through the lens of pop culture. The work sees two young ballet figures undulating in a trance-like state on two plinths or gogo boy boxes. The piece seeks to trouble the line between high art (Greco Roman nude sculptures on plinths) and low brow underground culture (gogo boys on boxes). While the audience is not addressed directly, they witness a courting between these two figures performing a seductive pas de deux. The gatekeeper of these two worlds is exposed when a figure dismounts the podium and positions themselves in the pose of the celebrated sculpture by Edgar Degas, Little Dancer Aged Fourteen.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hey Boo, 2022 - Hey Boo, 2022</image:title>
<image:caption>Hey Boo is an installation work that sees performers greeting visitors with a cheeky “hello” as they enter a gallery, whilst dancing to music in their headphones. Inspired by the afternoon tea concerts held by dance pioneer Ted Shawn at his farm Jacobs Pillow, in which his dancers wore bathrobes and served tea to patrons before performances, the work questions the role of the performer and service they provide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Untitled: Video Portraits 2017</image:title>
<image:caption>Drawing on my experience in popular music and dance, in Untitled: Video Portraits 1-10 I work with the music video format to explore its particular performativity. Untitled: Video Portraits (2017) are a group of studies that engage with the music video as a format at the centre of pop culture. The works consider iconoclasm, a critical engagement with technique and the formal properties of popular media. Whilst drawing on certain familiar values of the music video (in terms of rhythm, editing, length and addressal of audience) the pieces re-focus on performance within the medium. The videos are played without the sound so that the subject, the body and its gestures become more present; the identity of the music is present only through its embodiment. By masking the gender of the singer and the placing of the (white mid-30s) male body in relation to the music and its performance, the works highlight the codes of gender and performance of sexualities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>20 Remix is a look at the 20 years of my dance training and career. The research, which is on themes of memory, politics of the body and non-linear career paths, manifests as video works of movement and text, sound pieces, and notes on creative development and process. The three strands of research and source material considered are names of choreographers and teachers, movement phrases from professional work and an exploration of the preparation and assumptions of the dancer's body. This material has been manipulated and re-organised to create new phrase material and dialogues about being a worker.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Formed View investigates politics of perception of the moving figure through different kinds of improvisation. It is a collaborative research piece in which the body operates as a performance site and an object of observation, a piece looking into how the body gives us signs that we both can and cannot read, how the moving body can operate in registers defying expectations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anthropologists, dance practitioners, photographers, sound artists, visual artists, and writers are invited to respond from inside the installation. Their responses are fed to television screens so that spectators outside of the space but within the gallery can witness the research process. In doing so, the work asks “what is the role of the dancer as he/she is being watched? What is the role that the physical appearance of the dancer plays in the situation? What role does the mode of presentation play in the perception of the moving figure? How does improvisation affect or not the relation between the performer and the spectator?”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As part of Matthews’ 2021 show my body’s an exhibition at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Matthews created a series of collage works that responded to the site, the building and its history, activating parts of its archive through a personal lens. Matthews reflects that he never had the stereotypical muscular body that most male dancers are expected to have. Ann Reiking once commented in a rehearsal, “Chris you are not cut from the same cookie cutter as most dancers are cut from”. The Photo/Copy/Archive series was made by photocopying sections of the Sadler’s Wells’ performance posters from the last 80 years, to collect fragments of “marketable” bodies of dancers. Matthews has re-assembled these “cookie cutter” pieces into collages of disfigured monsters, reshaping our perceptions of the body through the creation of new posters. <image:title>Act 3, 2023/24 - Act 3, 2023/24</image:title>
<image:caption>Act 3 is an exploration of queer desire in later life. Working with a cast of collaborators aged 60+, the piece is inspired by queer modernism and the work of photography collective PaJaMa, who created scenes of magical realism featuring New York’s young bisexual or gay artists, dancers, and writers in the 1930s and 1940s. By working with collaborators whose desire was forbidden in their youth – a period with which desire is typically equated – Act 3 considers what it means for desire to be hidden. Referencing Kenneth Macmillan’s Bedroom Pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet, the performance unfolds on a mattress, combining surreal visuals with an everyday setting to blur the lines between fantasy and reality. This work premiered at Sadler’s Wells in April 2024 as part of Elixir Festival. Find out more here. Photography by by Gigi Giannella.</image:caption>

      <image:title>field of dreams, 2021 - field of dreams, 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>This light installation is part of a larger practise within Matthews’ work that explores nightclub culture and queering formal institutional spaces to feel more like a house party. The piece is a series of rotating disco lights that over time results in the viewer finding themself in a euphoric state. The work is choreographic in its proposal as it plays with time, space and energy. field of dreams speaks to the role that light plays in creating environments for partying. However, rather than inviting the viewer into the space as a participant, the constellation of disco lights makes entry impossible, putting the audience in the role of spectator.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Broken Lines, 2023 - Broken Lines</image:title>
<image:caption>During his student years in New York, Matthews asked his friend Erickatoure Aviance how can you tell if someone is gay (it was still relatively dangerous to approach strangers in those days). Without a beat she replied ‘just look for the broken lines, gurl’. Her insinuation that gay men carry their bodies differently to the stiff, stick figure heterosexual American man – how they sit into their hips, a dropped wrist, the line of their fingers – has stayed with Matthews ever since. Broken Lines plays with campness and the way the body performs the codes of gesture. In the works, Matthews reduces historical figures and art works down to their lines, looking at their postures and posings. Focusing on works that present the male figure in positions of power or desire, he highlights the “camp line” in these shows of masculinity and hierarchy.</image:caption>
